You and Your Goal

You and Your Goal

All of us at some point of time wonder why we are unable to achieve our goals! Right?

How many times have you asked yourself the question
"What separates me & my goal?"

That's because most if us have hardly ever tried to understand the factors which are stopping us from achieving our goals?

Here, I assume that we have a clarity on what our goal is!

A small exercise for those who wish to understand this better:

Sit down with a piece of paper and list down all those factors which you think are stopping you from achieving your goal.

It could be internal, or external.

Internal factors are those which are in your control and external factors are those which cannot be controlled by you.

After preparing the list, study it everyday for a week.

Study it from different perspectives.

Study each problem as though it is not yours and belonging to another person, and try to solve them.

Note down your thoughts during this exercise.

This exercise will hep you to understand your problems better and deeper.

You may also learn the finer factors which caused these and help to  refine the same to avoid similar  mistakes in future.

Quite often, you may even get answers to  questions which were unanswered before, and could lead to the solution to your problem.

Take a full one week.

After one full week of deep and focused analysis, chances are, you will come up with a list of ideas and action plans.

Study each one of them in detail. If you are confident that you have found the solution that will bail you out, it is great.

Sometimes you may come up with  more than one action plan.

In that case, study the plans, in order of priority, based on severity and criticality.

Now study the list, in the following manner:

1. What is the action required (possibly a choice among few options which you might have come up with). Ensure that you are fully convinced that this is the best among the available options.

2. What are the possible implications of such an action; Is the possibility of achieving the objective high?

3.  Are there risks in that action; If yes, what can be done to reduce or avoid that risk.

3. In case the plan is unsuccessful what price will I(the business) pay for that. What will be the impact of such a loss to my  current status, in terms of time, effort and money.

4. What are the resources needed for me to implement the plan. Do I have them; if not, how am I going to organize the same;

5. While taking such an action, what are the preparations should I do, to ensure that the current status is either not disturbed or disturbed the least.

6.  Do discuss with your team and peers to check if your plan of action is in the right direction, doable and result oriented.

7. Have a clear blueprint of the action plan

8. Set a date and work for it.

9. Go ahead and implement the same.

Those of you, who do not have answers for your problems after more than a week of focused study,  certainly need help.

Even if you don't get answers for the problems, there will be a greater awareness of the problem,  it's implications, and the need to solve the same.

Look out for people who can help you. Speak to those who care or capable.  Do not stop until you get the right help to solve your problems, otherwise it may be too late.

When you take external help, qualify those people who have been identified and chosen
1. are they really good at that
2. are they dependable
3.  Have clarity about what you expect from them, their scope of their work and their price.

In case, you don't know where to go for help, or could not get right help, then, don't panic.
